Mbare People’s Market

Mbare is the liveliest part of the capital, Harare. The quarter is the decades-old trading area for Africans bringing their produce in from the country, and it remains so today, hosting the country’s biggest market – known as the “musika” – at the nexus of all road transport.
The enormous complex of the “musika” nowadays has endless different sections, selling produce, clothes, crafts, live poultry, traditional medicines etc. The fresh produce area is a banquet of coloured fruits and vegetables whilst in another part, second-hand gear ranges from piles of clothing to old plastic bottles and bags. In this relatively litter-free country, nothing is thrown away, everything is recyclable and almost anything broken can be cobbled together again. Invention is boundless! Herbal medicines are sold at several stalls and you can track down traditional healers (n’angas) who work within the complex.
