MOZAMBIQUE CYCLING TRIP

Mozambique Cycling Trip - 12 days

Participants are advised to bring mountain bikes. Road conditions are variable ranging from good tarred roads/pot-holed tarred roads/gravel roads. When sand is encountered, bicycles will be transported by vehicle.

Due to the long distances, part of the outward and return journey will be undertaken by 4x4 vehicle. The vehicle (with trailer) will accompany and support the group for the whole trip.

As there are also several kilometres between stopovers each day, approximately 80km/day will be covered by bicycle (with the exception of the days spent in the Bazaruto archipelago and on the return journey to Harare) with the rest of the journey being undertaken by vehicle. Shorter stopovers are not possible for lack of overnight facilities.

Day 1

Arrive in Harare (Zimbabwe) in the morning. Rest and recuperate in B&B.
Visit of Harare by bicycle.

Day 2

6.am Depart from Harare by vehicle (with bicycles loaded on trailer)
Cross Mozambique border at Mutare
Off-load bicycles after Save River and start cycling. (Good tarred rd/pot-holed tarred rd)
Destination: Inhassoro
Camp at Complexo Turistico Seta

Day 3

Day trip to Ilha Santa Carolina (Paradise Island) by boat
Spend the day swimming, snorkelling, picnic lunch
Return to Inhassoro

Day 4

Cycle to Vilankulos (no transfer by vehicle necessary) (Pot-holed tarred rd/gravel rd)
Camp at Blue Water Beach Resort

Day 5

Day trip by boat to the Bazaruto archipelago
Snorkelling, scuba diving
Return to Vilankulos

Day 6

Drive to Nhachengue turn off to Pomene
Off-load bicycles and cycle to Pomene (gravel rd)
Camp at Pomene Lodge

Day 7

Activities at Pomene
Snorkelling, scuba diving, mangrove trail
(No cycling - there's too much sand!)

Day 8

Drive to Massinga.
Off-load bikes, pedal to Inhambane (tarred rd/gravel rd)
Camp at Coconut Bay - Baia dos Cocos

Day 9

Explore the historical town of Inhambane by bicycle

Day 10

Depart for Espungabera
Drive to the turn-off for Espungabera, off-load bikes and cycle to Espungabera
Cross Mozambique/Zimbabwe border
Camp at Chimanimani Hotel (Chimanimani)

Day 11

Drive to Great Zimbabwe Ruins (Zimbabwe)
Visit Ruins
Arrive in Harare at nightfall

Day 12

Depart from Harare International Airport
