BOTSWANA'S ATTRACTIONS

Chobe National Park

After a visit to Chobe in the 1930s, Sir Charles Rey, the Resident Commissioner of Bechuanaland, proposed that the area be set aside as a wildlife reserve. Nothing much happened until 1968, when Chobe was created by the new independent government and became Botswana's first national park.

The area was originally inhabited by the San and Basubiya people and then by the Batawana in the early 20th century, but by 1975 all indigenous people had been relocated. Chobe is the second-largest national park in Botswana (10,566 sq km) and is understandably one of the country's greatest attractions.
